Death the Kid (デス・ザ・キッド, Desu Za Kiddo?)

Death the Kid is Shinigami's son and the meister of Patti and Liz. He is called Kid by his friends and family. He refers to Shinigami as 'honorable father' (父上, chichiue?) and seems to be named after him, as it has been shown that Shinigami's name was "Death" when he was younger. Kid suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is represented as a complete obsession about everything being symmetrical. To him, anything symmetrical is beautiful and if something is off by even the slightest measurement he will try to correct it right away. While Kid himself tries to look as symmetrical as possible, his hair causes him problems as one side is completely black while the other has three white strips going across it. Showing him anything that is too asymmetrical or mentioning his hair will send Kid into a state of massive depression, make him feel ill, or cause him to cough up blood and faint in the most extreme of cases. This behavior sometimes results in Kid being unable to fight because he is distracted by his enemy's symmetry, or by the lack of symmetry in his surroundings. When this happens it usually requires some encouragement from Patti or Liz to get Kid to focus again.

The lines in Kid's hair are called Sanzu Lines. In the manga, Mosquito noted that since the lines are not connected Kid was not at full power. When using the Brew to reattach the arm he lost in a fight to Mosquito, Kid noticed that the Brew had also connected one of the lines to the other side of his head. This caused Kid to gain some new abilities, like being able to upgrade the caliber of his shots from Patti and Liz from .38 to .42 and changing his guns to visually match the Israeli made Desert Eagle (which have the words Death Eagle engraved on them). In the anime, all three of the Sanzu lines connect when Kid is near death, causing his Soul Resonance to transform into two oversized cannons on his arms.

Although his father has said that Kid is a shinigami and does not need to collect souls, Kid wants to make a Death Scythe of his own. Because he uses two weapons (the guns do not count as a set), Kid will have to collect twice as many souls (198 evil human souls and two witch souls). In the manga Maka mentioned that it is normally hard to match soul wavelengths with more than one weapon, but Kid is able to do so because he, Liz, and Patti have a mutual admiration for each other. Kid admires Patti and Liz's positive souls due to his negative personality.

As he was born a Shinigami, Kid's potential power is technically far above that of his fellow DWMA students. However, the details of Kid's (or his father's) nature as Shinigami have not been revealed. Both share a skull motif (in Shinigami's mask and Kid's rings and necktie) and dark, vaguely monstrous shadows appear around them when either use their abilities (such as Soul Resonance). They also seem to possess the ability to store souls within their bodies, as opposed to other technicians who can only hold onto the souls or give them to their weapon to devour.

When fighting, Kid holds his guns upside-down and pulls the triggers with his pinkies. He refuses to fight with a single weapon as it would not be symmetrical. Kid is also able to fight without Liz and Patti through martial arts however, focusing on chops, kicks, and hammer blows and using various stances (usually Stance of Sin, but after one of his sanzu lines connected he battled Mosquito with Stance of Punishment). His Soul Resonance attack is called Death Cannon and morphs the guns into a form resembling cannon barrel. In the manga Kid is able to strike multiple targets at once through a technique called the Sanzu River Shot - Sanzu Falls when one of his Sanzu lines is connected. Kid has a flight-capable skateboard called Beelzebub, which he uses as a form of short distance transportation, though it could be used for long distance as well, as in the manga he used it for flying to the Sahara. Kid's favorite number is eight because of its symmetry.
